Writing across the curriculum

Writing across the curriculum 2

Recent changes to examinations at both GCSE and A level have seen our students being required to do more extended writing in most of their subjects. As a response to this we are developing a whole school approach to writing, which builds on our existing, excellent literacy resources and provision and considers the most up to date educational research about writing in schools.

We are very clear that students need to take responsibility for the quality of their writing. Thus, we are stressing to them the importance of proof-reading work before it is submitted for assessment by their teacher. The features that we expect them to check their work for are listed here:

· Capital letters

· Basic punctuation – full stops, commas and apostrophes

· Appropriate paragraphing

· Spelling of key terminology

Students are encouraged to use the pages in their planner which give tips on extended writing and proof-reading before they hand in a piece of work. Submitted work that has clearly not been proof-read for these features is liable to be returned to the student for amendment.

Modern examinations require our students to write for a whole variety of different purposes and it is crucial that they are well versed in these different styles of writing before they reach Key Stage 4. We have mapped where at Key Stage 3 all students can expect to experience different styles of writing in their lessons. This means that at specified times in the year students will be taught explicitly the mechanics of these different styles of writing, whether it be letter writing, report writing or any other of our 5 targeted styles. See below for the ‘Writing Matrix’ which sets this out.
