French Culture Day

On Monday 7 July, year 8 French students had the opportunity to participate in a French Cultural Day.  This involved four different activities, designed to enhance students’ knowledge and appreciation of French culture.  Thank you to our Year 8 French students for their enthusiasm in participating in the day’s events and thank you to Mrs Rey, Mrs Bellers, Miss Ouali, Miss Huang and Mrs Bright for running the activities.

Please continue reading to find out what some of our Year 8 students had to say about the day.

“Today, all year 8 students participated in a day centred around French culture. We did several different activities, starting with a game of boules (Petanque). This is a very popular game in France and it was very fun. We got into groups of four and had to throw balls to try to land them next to the jack which was a smaller white ball. It was quick and easy to play a game but still very enjoyable.

Then we learnt how French students write. French students are taught cursive from as young as four! This activity was a lot more difficult but it was still quite fun and educational. Some of the cursive letters are very different to how you would normally write them; for example the letter ‘z’ has a long swirly tail. It was interesting to see how the different letters looked.

Afterwards, we went to a classroom set up to look like a French cafe. The decorations were stunning and each table had a centrepiece. We had to order our food in French which meant we learnt some new vocabulary such as ‘du beurre’ which means butter. The food was very nice and was themed around common food in France like pains au chocolat and croissants.

Finally we made Eiffel Towers out of paper. These were tricky and required a big attention to detail to cut, glue and fold the shapes so that they resembled a small three dimensional Eiffel Tower. This wasn't my favourite activity as it required a lot of patience (which I don't have.) However, it was still quite fun.

Overall I found French day very much fun and would happily do it again.”

“I thought that the French culture day was good. The boules (Petanque) were very fun (and had lots of funny moments), and the Eiffel Tower making activity was both enjoyable and satisfying. The French handwriting activity was difficult, but I persevered and completed the worksheet. However, my favourite part of the day was the French café. ‘J’aimerais un croissant avec du chocolat!’ - I would like a croissant with chocolate! I thoroughly enjoyed the taste of the chocolate inside of the croissant. I believe that the croissant was a delectable treat for my hungry self, and I loved the texture of the brioche and pain au chocolat, it was just a great buttery snack. It was so amazing.”

“Today was a very jam-packed day full of different French activities and my favourite being the cafe where you got to try various French cuisines. The cafe's decorations were breath-taking and you could see the time people had taken to make them.

A close second to my favourite was the French game boules (Petanque) which was very much fun and a great laugh with my friends. After a while I understood the right technique and I was smashing it. Although it was a quick game, it was very enjoyable to play and at times unexpected turns were taken.”
